Split a bill including tip equally
Enter the total bill, choose a tip percentage, and set the number of people. The calculator divides the total โ bill plus tip โ equally between everyone in the group.
Tip amount = Bill ร Tip % รท 100
Total = Bill + Tip amount
Per person = Total รท Number of people
For example: a $120 dinner for 4 people with a 20% tip. Tip = $24. Total = $144. Per person = $36.
| Bill | Tip % | People | Per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| $50 | 15% | 2 | $28.75 |
| $100 | 18% | 4 | $29.50 |
| $120 | 20% | 3 | $48.00 |
| $200 | 20% | 5 | $48.00 |
| $80 | 15% | 2 | $46.00 |
This calculator assumes an equal split. In practice, groups often split unevenly โ one person ordered more, or someone is a guest. The most common approaches are: each person pays for their own items plus a proportional share of the tip, or one person pays the full bill and others transfer their share via payment apps like Venmo, PayPal, or Revolut.
Many restaurants โ particularly in the UK and Europe โ automatically add a service charge of 10โ12.5% to the bill. If the bill already includes a service charge, you do not need to add a further tip unless you want to. Check the bill before adding an additional tip on top of an existing charge.
Per-person amounts often produce odd cents. A common approach is to round each person's share to the nearest dollar and have the last person cover any remainder โ or simply round everyone up, which gives the server a slightly larger tip. On a $144 total split four ways, each person paying $36 is exact. On a $145 total split three ways, each person owes $48.33 โ most groups round to $49 each.
Add the tip to the total bill, then divide by the number of people. For $100 with 20% tip split four ways: $120 รท 4 = $30 per person.
It does not matter mathematically โ the result is identical. Adding tip first and dividing, or dividing first and adding tip per person, gives the same amount per person.
Check your bill before adding a tip. If a service charge is already included, no additional tip is required โ though you can leave extra for exceptional service.
This calculator does an equal split. For an unequal split, calculate each person's share of the pre-tip bill separately, then add each person's proportional tip on top of their share.
The same percentage applies whether splitting or paying alone. In the US, 18โ20% is standard. When splitting, it is easiest to agree on a percentage before calculating to avoid confusion.
